The military-security implications of the deepening relations between the Zionist regime and Saudi Arabia for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Axis of Resistance

Abstract

In light of recent geopolitical developments in West Asia, the deepening relations between the Zionist regime and Saudi Arabia—two influential regional actors—carry significant implications for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Axis of Resistance. This article, employing a descriptive-explanatory method and utilizing Randall Schweller’s theory of Balance of Interests, along with an analysis of the strategic motivations and orientations of both parties, seeks to answer the key question: What are the military-security consequences of the growing relationship between Saudi Arabia and the Zionist regime for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Axis of Resistance? The findings of this study suggest that the increasing proximity between Saudi Arabia and the Zionist regime enhances Tel Aviv’s strategic depth and deterrence capabilities against Iran, thereby shifting the regional balance of power in favor of Iran’s rivals. Furthermore, the formation of bilateral or multilateral military cooperation frameworks within the context of CENTCOM, efforts to establish new alliances such as the “Arab NATO” or the “Middle East Strategic Alliance,” and the expansion of intelligence-security cooperation among these actors, create capacities for destabilizing Iran and weakening resistance groups. The article concludes that the growing convergence between the Zionist regime and Saudi Arabia may lead to intensified cooperation—particularly with the United States—in intelligence and security operations against the Islamic Republic of Iran. In more distant scenarios, such cooperation could potentially extend to joint military actions aimed at undermining the Axis of Resistance and targeting the Islamic Republic itself as part of strategic planning by the involved leaderships.
